Elegant wide-swash script

Mahogany

Mahogany is an elegant script in white over a dark photograph: heavy shaded downstrokes, hairline joins, a capital M drawn as one wide travelling swash and a y whose tail sweeps out to the edge of the frame.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Mahogany.

The name is set as one long line across a theatre photograph, and the face is a formal display script: the M opens with a swash that travels the width of three letters before it starts the word, the a and the h are narrow, the o is a tight oval and the g and the y drop loops that reach the lower margin and curl back, so the word reads as a drawn mark rather than a set line. The contrast is high, with a soft shade on the downstrokes and a hairline on the joins, and the white ink over a dark image does the work of a background plate. Small tracked lines at the foot name the style, the studio and the year, and the composition is a poster rather than a specimen. Mahogany is a formal script for covers, labels and marks that need a luxurious tone, and it needs wide margins for the swash.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Mahogany’s stroke geometry.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a culture magazine

A wide-swash script over a photograph turns a cover line into a designed element, and the high contrast reads at newsstand distance.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 230 by 300 mm cover: set the cover word at 90 pt on one line, keep 26 mm of clear ground beneath before the cover lines at 11 pt, and hold 22 mm of margin so the swash is not trimmed.

Pre-production check

A white hairline over a bright photograph disappears; print one cover and check every stroke separates from the image before the run.

Brand & packaging

Label for a boutique hotel bar

A formal script with a travelling capital says the room is expensive without a crest, and the white on dark reads under low bar lighting.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 60 by 90 mm label: set the house name at 17 pt on one line, keep 7 mm of clear ground beneath before the vintage at 5 pt, and hold 5 mm of margin on all four sides.

Pre-production check

A wide swash can run past a small label die; print one on the real stock and check both ends before the order.

Wedding

Cover for a formal wedding album

The script gives an album cover the weight of a bound book, and a single travelling capital carries a long pair of names in one line.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 300 by 300 mm album cover: set the names at 44 pt on one line, keep 22 mm of clear ground beneath before the date at 11 pt, and hold 20 mm of margin on all four sides.

Pre-production check

Two long names may not fit the swash on one line; print one cover at the finished size and check the fitting before the run.
