Soft narrow serif display with diamond tittles

Jollivane

Jollivane is a narrow serif display with soft, slightly bowed strokes, diamond tittles and a gentle bounce on the baseline, so a word reads as a hand-lettered sign rather than as a text serif.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Jollivane.

The capital J is the tell: its stem bows outward as it descends, its foot curves back to the left instead of stopping in a serif, and the hook ends slightly above the baseline, which lets the following letter move in close. Every stem in the word carries a serif that is drawn as a small soft wedge rather than a crisp bracket, and the thin strokes are only slightly lighter than the thick ones, so contrast stays low and the word keeps an even colour on the page. The i and the j are topped with solid diamonds instead of dots, and those two shapes are the only closed counters above the x-height. Spacing is generous and the baseline lifts and settles a few points between letters, which gives the word its sign-written feel without breaking the line. Ends are cut blunt, never tapered. The dark green scene, the red banner and the small holly ornament are presentation; the typeface is the word.

Christmas

Title on a handmade gift label

Soft narrow serifs with diamond tittles read as a hand-painted sign at label size, which suits a gift that is wrapped by hand, and the low contrast keeps the word visible on a small kraft tag where a high-contrast serif would grey out.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the greeting at 14 pt on a 50 by 80 mm kraft tag, set the recipient's name in the same face at 18 pt below it, and keep the hole 8 mm from the top so it clears the diamond on the i.

Pre-production check

Kraft stock and a narrow serif fight at 14 pt; print one tag on the real stock and widen the letterspacing slightly rather than increasing the size.

Editorial & posters

Section opener for a seasonal feature

A narrow serif with a slight bounce carries a festive feature without the novelty of a script, and because it stays low-contrast it sits comfortably against a text serif on the same spread.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the section title at 44 pt on the opening spread, keep the standfirst in an 11 pt text serif with 15 pt leading, and align the title's left edge to the text column rather than the margin so the bow of the J is not cut.

Pre-production check

A bowed capital that starts on the margin edge can look like a misprint; check the title against the column edge at final size and inset it by 1 mm if necessary.

Birthday

Menu header for a milestone dinner

A soft serif with diamond details makes a menu for a family celebration feel considered rather than catered, and the narrow letterforms let a long name fit a single centred line at a readable size.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the name at 28 pt centred at the head of an A5 menu, keep courses and descriptions in a light serif at 9 pt, and leave 12 mm between the header and the first course so the diamond tittles have air.

Pre-production check

Candlelight at a dinner table lowers contrast on a cream menu; check the printed menu in dim light and darken the ink rather than enlarging the header.
