School practice alphabet with a ruled midline and a dashed trace cut
Happy Trace is an instructional alphabet built around the writing line: a solid model sits between ruled guides and a dashed companion version sits beneath it, so a worksheet teaches a letter by copying rather than by describing it.

Visual anatomy & craft review
The H keeps two tall stems against the top rule, the a closes a single-storey bowl on the midline, the p drops below the baseline, the y takes a straight diagonal tail and the r finishes a short arm, all at a monoline school weight with open counters and a wide fit. The face ships in four forms in the sample: solid model, dashed trace, and the lighter variants used for the row beneath. The guides are the character, not decoration: the x-height sits exactly on the midline so a child can see where a bowl should close. Because the strokes are even and open, the alphabet photocopies at 12 pt without filling in. The orange band, the crayon drawings, the waving children and the credit line are presentation; the ruled model alphabet is the face.

The built-in midline and the dashed copy make a printable practice sheet that needs no second font, and the open bowls read at 18 pt on a photocopy.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print an A4 sheet: set the model row at 18 pt between guides 12 mm apart, set the dashed row 14 mm beneath, and leave a 20 mm margin at the left for a name and a date line.
Pre-production check
A dashed trace thinner than 0.3 mm disappears on a school copier; check the photocopy and print the trace at a heavier weight than the model.
The ruled model gives a child a reference while writing, and the even monoline holds at 22 pt under the plastic of a laminated desk card.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print a 100 by 60 mm card: set the name at 22 pt on the ruled line, repeat it in the dashed cut at 60 percent size underneath, and laminate with 5 mm of clear border so the ruling is not trimmed off.
Pre-production check
A laminated card curls and lifts the print at the corner; check the finished card and round the corners before laminating.
The instructional shapes read at distance as friendly lettering, and the dashed companion lets a poster invite children to trace on the wall at 60 mm.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print an A2 poster: set the headline solid at 60 mm, set one word in the dashed cut at the same size beneath it, and leave 40 mm of white board under both lines for a marker tray.
Pre-production check
A dashed outline printed large reads as a mistake rather than as an invitation; check the poster and add a short instruction line above the dashed word.
