Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving is a botanical harvest serif in which the letters are illustrated with pumpkins, cornucopias and vine leaves: the bowls fill with fruit, the stems carry curling vines and the serifs finish as small leaves. The illustration sits inside the letter, so the counters must stay open, and the leaf serifs are the finest element. It needs roughly 34 mm for the fruit and the leaf serifs to read, and it is best in one warm ink on cream and kraft, or a two-colour build where the fruit takes a second spot colour.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Happy Thanksgiving’s stroke geometry.

Autumn

Harvest-dinner invite, menu and place card

A botanical harvest serif sets the table's own theme in the lettering rather than a printed pumpkin. The fruit in the bowls reads at 32 mm on an invite, and two warm inks print the invite, the menu and the place cards as one suite.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Invite 130 x 180 mm, word 32 mm with 8 mm vine clearance, details 9/13 pt, 15 mm margins. Menu 120 x 210 mm, header 20 mm, courses 9/12 pt. Place card 90 x 50 mm, name 12 mm, 4 mm margins.

Pre-production check

A 90 x 50 mm place card at 12 mm turns the fruit into speckle and the guest name reads as decoration. Set place cards in a plain companion and keep the face for the header, then check one card before the set.

Thank you

Thank-you card, hostess gift tag and jar label

A harvest serif reads as a note of thanks for a meal rather than a printed acknowledgement, which is what a host wants to receive. The vine details hold at 24 mm on a card, and one ink prints the card, the tag and the preserve label in a single order.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Card A6, greeting 24 mm with 8 mm vine clearance, note 8/11 pt, 12 mm margins. Gift tag 50 x 90 mm, word 12 mm with a 5 mm hole and 8 mm clear. Jar label 70 x 45 mm, word 14 mm, 4 mm die margin.

Pre-production check

A 70 x 45 mm jar label at 14 mm loses the leaf serifs and the word prints as a plain serif with dirty edges. Raise the label word to 20 mm, and check one labelled jar before the batch.

Classroom & school

Harvest-festival poster, stall card and tray label

A harvest serif gives a school festival the look of a printed programme rather than a clip-art poster. The cornucopia details read at 60 mm on a corridor wall, and one ink prints the poster, the stall cards and the tray labels in a single pass.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Poster A3, word 80 mm with 12 mm vine clearance, details 24 mm, 15 mm margins. Stall card 105 x 75 mm, word 20 mm, 5 mm margins. Tray label 120 x 60 mm, word 16 mm, 5 mm margins.

Pre-production check

At 16 mm on a tray label the leaf serifs fill under lamination and the word reads as a smudge after handling. Raise labels to 22 mm and laminate one before the set.
