Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Fenn.

Fenn is a monogram font built from a sixteen-petal chrysanthemum medallion: the initials sit inside a radial bloom with symmetrical petals, a fine outline ring and a small centre disc. The medallion is a single locked construction, so the whole mark scales as one artwork rather than as letters. It needs roughly 25 mm for the petal outlines to stay separate, and it is best in one metallic foil on dark stock, or a single ink on ivory at 30 mm and above.

Brand & packaging

Hotel or spa identity, key card and towel embroidery

A radial bloom monogram reads as an established house crest, which is what a small hotel wants on its key card and linen. The symmetrical medallion holds as one mark at 22 mm, and a single foil pass on dark card gives the identity its finish without a second process.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Key card 85 x 55 mm, medallion 22 mm with 4 mm petal clearance, 5 mm margins. Folded card 105 x 148 mm, medallion 30 mm, 12 mm margins. Towel embroidery 90 mm across, medallion 60 mm, 15 mm edge margin.

Pre-production check

At 22 mm on a key card the 0.3 mm petal outlines merge and the bloom reads as a solid dot. Keep the card medallion at 26 mm or use the filled variant, and print one card before the order.

Wedding

Invitation crest, wax-seal sticker and programme header

A chrysanthemum medallion reads as a woven crest above the couple's names, which is what a formal invitation wants in place of a plain monogram. The radial symmetry gives the crest weight at 30 mm, and one ink on heavy uncoated card keeps the petal outlines open.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Invitation 130 x 180 mm, crest 30 mm with 5 mm petal clearance, names 20 pt, details 9/13 pt, 15 mm margins. Seal 40 mm round, crest 30 mm, 4 mm die margin. Programme header 148 x 30 mm, crest 22 mm.

Pre-production check

A 40 mm wax-seal sticker carries the crest into a hot emboss where the petal gaps close under pressure. Use a flat seal or reduce to eight petals, and press one seal before the batch.

Editorial & posters

Journal colophon, chapter ornament and spine mark

A radial medallion works as a printer's device, which is what a small press puts on a colophon page and a spine. The locked construction scales from a 10 mm spine mark to a 40 mm chapter ornament without redrawing, and one ink keeps the petal outlines crisp on an uncoated text stock.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Colophon 12 mm medallion, caption 8/11 pt. Chapter ornament 40 mm with 6 mm petal clearance, 20 mm above the opening line. Spine mark 10 mm, 4 mm from the trim edge.

Pre-production check

A 10 mm spine mark closes every petal gap and the device reads as a dark circle on the shelf. Keep the spine at 12 mm or above, and check one printed spine before the binding run.
