High-contrast script with a deep return swash

Candy

Candy is a high-contrast playful script whose capital rises far above a small x-height body and whose final y drops into a wide looped swash that returns across the whole word beneath the baseline.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Candy.

The capital C is a single thick crescent on a hairline axis, and its lower terminal sits just above the baseline rather than resting on it, so the eye is carried forward into the next letter. The lowercase body is narrow with fat downstrokes and thin joins, and the dots on the descenders are drawn as small circles at the end of loops rather than as strokes, which is what makes the word read as confectionery. The n and the d keep their shoulders high and rounded, and the y finishes with a deep loop that travels left and up, ending in a small ball under the first letter. That return is the widest element in the sample and it sets the space the word needs. Terminals are rounded rather than tapered. The scattered sweets around the words and the tracked label at top are presentation; the script is the word.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Candy’s stroke geometry.

Birthday

Cake banner for a children's party

The wide return swash gives a short name a decorative base that reads as a ribbon across a cake or a banner, and the rounded terminals stay safe and legible when the letters are cut from card at party scale.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the name at 40 mm tall across a 200 mm banner, keep the age in the same face at 20 mm at the right, and leave 10 mm under the swash so the string holes never sit inside the loop.

Pre-production check

Cutting thin joins from card leaves fragile arms; check the vector at full size and hold the return swash at least 4 mm thick before the file goes to the plotter.

Brand & packaging

Label for a sweet shop's own brand

A high-contrast script with a rounded finish suits a shop that sells by weight, and the deep return makes a two-word product name look designed rather than typed on a small square label.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the product name at 11 pt on a 50 by 50 mm label, keep the weight and price in a small grotesque at 5 pt at the base, and leave the swash clear of the bottom edge where the label curls on the jar.

Pre-production check

A label wrapped round a jar compresses the swash at the curve; check the printed sheet on the actual jar and shorten the return if it disappears over the edge.

Valentine

Gift tag for a box of chocolates

The playful contrast and the ball terminals carry a romantic message without the formal restraint of a calligraphic script, which suits a gift that is meant to be fun rather than ceremonial.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the message at 14 pt on a 45 by 90 mm tag, keep the recipient's name in the same face at 10 pt beneath, and punch the hole in the top 10 mm so the capital's crescent stays intact.

Pre-production check

The narrow joins on a 45 mm tag get lost in the punch and string; check the printed crop and move the hole outward if the thread crosses the lettering.
