Retro rounded display script with heavy loops and a bouncing baseline

Beastly Halloween

Beastly Halloween is a heavy retro display script with fat rounded strokes, generous loops and a baseline that rises and falls between letters, so a two-word title reads as a hand-painted sign.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Beastly Halloween.

The capital B is drawn as a tall looped entry that folds into a heavy stem, and the following letters keep the same thick stroke: the e and the a close their counters to slits, the s finishes with a fat terminal, and the t is crossed by a bar that sits high enough to leave the loop visible. Loops on the l, the y and the H are large and open, and the baseline lifts and settles by a few points between letters, which is what gives the line its bounce without any slant. Weight never thins, even at the joins, so the words hold together as solid shapes at a distance, and the ends are blunt and rounded. The black ground, the cream ink, the scattered stars and the pumpkin characters below are presentation; the script is the two words.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Beastly Halloween’s stroke geometry.

Halloween

Sign for a porch display

The heavy rounded forms read from the pavement and stay legible against a dark porch, and the bouncing baseline makes a short greeting look hand-painted rather than typeset.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the greeting at 110 mm tall on a 600 by 400 mm board, keep the date in a bold grotesque at 30 mm, and leave 40 mm of margin so the loops on the last letter stay inside the frame.

Pre-production check

Painted board lettering in a wet autumn can run; seal the board and check the heaviest joins after the first coat before adding the second.

Halloween

Cupcake topper and wrapper set

A heavy retro script cuts cleanly at small scale, and because the counters stay open the topper is still readable when it is standing in a crowded display.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the greeting at 45 mm tall on a 90 mm topper, keep the wrapper print in the same face at 12 mm, and leave 5 mm around the finest loop so the card does not tear at the notch.

Pre-production check

Card toppers tear at the poke hole; check the vector against the hole position and shift the last loop clear before the batch is cut.

Halloween

Front of a printed invitation

The retro weight gives a party invitation presence on a small card, and the bouncing baseline fills the width so the invitation does not need a border or an illustration.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 54 pt on a 105 by 148 mm card, set the time and address in a bold 10 pt grotesque, and keep 12 mm between the script and the detail block so the descender loops do not touch it.

Pre-production check

A heavy script on matte card can look flat at 54 pt; print one card on the real stock and check that the bounce is still visible from a metre away.
