Tall hairline calligraphic script

Valentine Day

Valentine Day is a tall hairline script in white on a dark page: very thin monoline letters with tall looping ascenders, small round bowls, a long descending tail on the y, and a heart-shaped wreath of wire and berries behind the words.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Valentine Day.

Two words are stacked with a wide gap between them, and the face is a hairline script: the stroke is a single thin line throughout, the capitals rise into tall narrow loops, the a and the e close into small circles, the t carries a fine crossbar that extends past the letter, and the y drops a long stem that swings left below the baseline. The letters connect where the stroke allows and stand apart where it lifts, so the line reads as writing made with a fine pen rather than a font, and the extreme height of the ascenders is what gives the words their vertical pull. Behind the type a wreath of fine wire and dark red berries is arranged in the shape of a heart, and the ground is a soft grey that makes the white line glow without shouting. Valentine Day is a hairline script for wedding stationery, romantic cards, labels and editorial titles, and it needs a dark ground, a large size and a printer who can hold a hairline.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Valentine Day’s stroke geometry.

Valentine

Card for a February greeting

A hairline script sets a quiet, romantic tone, and on a dark card the white line reads clearly at a small size without any ornament crowding the message.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print an A6 card at 105 by 148 mm: set the greeting at 26 pt over two lines, keep 14 mm of clear ground beneath before the note at 8 pt, and hold 12 mm of margin on all four sides.

Pre-production check

A white hairline on dark card can break at the joins where the stroke lifts; print one card on the intended stock and check the thinnest strokes before the run.

Wedding

Menu cover for an evening reception

A tall hairline script lifts a menu cover without any ornament beside it, and the white on dark suits a table that is lit for the evening rather than for daylight.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 130 by 200 mm menu: set the heading at 40 pt on one line, keep 24 mm of clear ground beneath before the courses at 9 pt, and hold 16 mm of margin on all four sides.

Pre-production check

Candlelight flattens contrast badly; proof one printed menu in the actual room, under the real candles, before the order goes out.

Editorial & posters

Title for a photo essay

A thin script over a photograph reads as a caption written by the photographer, and the tall ascenders fill a narrow column without a block of type.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 240 by 300 mm spread: set the title at 54 pt on one line, keep 20 mm of clear ground beneath before the text at 10 pt, and hold 20 mm of margin on the outer edges.

Pre-production check

A hairline over a busy photograph needs a dark and even area; check the placement on the actual image before printing.
