Outline rounded retro display

Remember Christmas

Remember Christmas is an outline-only rounded display in dark contour on cream: monoline capitals with soft corners, a small inner loop inside each bowl, a tight rhythm and a drop shadow, set in two lines with a star and pinecone still life and a caption in tracked caps beneath.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Remember Christmas.

The face is drawn as a contour with an open interior, which makes it a template as much as a typeface: the outline can be filled, coloured or left open, and the specimen shows it open on a cream ground so the construction is visible. The shapes are rounded and slightly retro, the inner loops give each bowl a decorative detail, and the tight spacing lets a long word run the width of the plate. Because the stroke is a single contour, the face needs a decent size to keep the contour from closing, and the specimen sets two lines large. The ground is a flat cream with pinecones and small stars at the edges, and the caption beneath is tracked caps in a small grotesque, which keeps the plate in period without introducing a second expressive face.

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Remember Christmas’s stroke geometry.

Christmas

Card for a December mailing

An outline display can be printed open or filled, so a small business can run one card design in two looks without buying a second font, and the contour reads at A6.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A6 card: the greeting at 26 pt with a 0.4 mm contour, the details in a 9 pt sans, and a small star. Keep 12 mm margins and print one ink on a cream card, filling the letters in a second colour if the budget allows.

Pre-production check

Check the 26 pt greeting, where a contour can close at home-print resolution; keep the interior above 1 mm. Confirm the 9 pt details keep a 4.5:1 contrast and that the stars clear the trim.

Classroom & school

Colouring sheet for a class

An outline face is a ready-made colouring activity, and the open interiors give children a defined area to fill without the letters losing their shape.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A4 sheet: the greeting at 60 mm cap height with a 0.5 mm contour, the instructions in a 10 pt sans, and a 15 mm margin. Print on white copier stock so the contours stay sharp for crayon work.

Pre-production check

Check the A4 contour at 60 mm, where a thick line fills the interior; keep the interior above 8 mm. Confirm the instructions read at arm's length and that the greeting fits the page without cropping.

Brand & packaging

Window decal for a shop

An outline face reads on glass without blocking the interior, and the same artwork can be cut from vinyl or printed as a cling, which suits a seasonal window on a budget.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Cut a 600 by 250 mm decal: the shop name at 90 mm cap height with a 6 mm contour, the hours in a 20 mm sans, and 30 mm clear from the frame. Keep the smallest interior at 12 mm so the vinyl does not tear.

Pre-production check

Check the decal at 600 mm, where a 6 mm contour can lift; widen it for vinyl. Confirm the hours read from the pavement and that the decal clears the door swing.
