Tall condensed grotesque

Polaroid

Polaroid is a tall condensed grotesque in white over a monochrome portrait: very narrow capitals with flat terminals, a closed counter in the O, a short bar on the R, and a height that runs almost the full frame, so the word reads as a stretched sign rather than a standard alphabet.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Polaroid.

The word is set once, edge to edge, and the drawing is a grotesque pushed into extreme condensation: the stems are thin relative to the height, the counters are narrow slits, and the curves of the O and the D are drawn with straight sides and tight shoulders, which keeps the face from looking squeezed. The terminals are cut flat, the A is a sharp triangle with a high crossbar, and the R's leg kicks out without reaching the baseline, so the letters keep a mechanical rhythm. Because the width is so narrow, the tracking can stay very tight and the word still reads as a plate, which is what makes it work at masthead scale. The ground is a blurred black-and-white photograph with three small credit lines beneath in a light mono, and the specimen gives the type almost the entire page.

Brand & packaging

Masthead for a photography studio

A condensed grotesque puts a long studio name across a narrow letterhead without shrinking the height, and the neutral drawing keeps the mark from dating the way a stylised face would.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the masthead at 24 pt across a 90 mm letterhead and 60 mm wide for a stamp, with a 6 pt mono descriptor at 120 units tracking. Keep the masthead one colour and reserve at least a third of the cap height as clear space.

Pre-production check

Check the 24 pt masthead on the letterhead, where a narrow counter can fill on uncoated paper; keep the size at or above 18 pt. Confirm the 6 pt descriptor reads at arm's length and that the condensed word still parses at 40 percent in a thumbnail.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a photography annual

A tall condensed face lets a long title span the trim while leaving the photograph visible, which is the whole reason a photo annual would choose it over a normal-width grotesque.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 120 mm cap height across 230 mm, the volume line in a 9 pt mono, and the credits at 7 pt. Keep the title over the quiet side of the image and let the photograph run full bleed behind it.

Pre-production check

Check the 120 mm title, where the extreme height can clip at the trim; keep 12 mm clear on all sides. Confirm the 9 pt volume line reads at newsstand distance and that the thin stems hold against the light area of the photograph.

Summer

Poster for a photo exhibition

A condensed grotesque reads as contemporary gallery signage, and the tall format fits a long exhibition title above the details without crowding the image area.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A2 portrait: the title at 90 mm cap height, the dates in a 14 mm sans, and the venue in 10 mm. Keep 30 mm margins, place the title in the upper third, and leave the lower half for a single photograph.

Pre-production check

Check the poster at three metres, where the thin stems can disappear against a mid-tone image; keep the title on a flat panel or in a high-contrast area. Confirm the 10 mm venue reads at two metres and that the title clears the trim.
