Curved retro serifs with extended terminals

Picky Retro

Picky Retro is a chunky retro display serif in burnt orange: fat bracketed strokes, curved serifs that drop below the baseline, and long ball terminals that turn the P and the R into flourishes.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Picky Retro.

Picky sits above Retro in two rows that nearly touch, and both words are built from the same generous bowl: heavy stems, deeply bracketed serifs that curve down at the foot of the P, the k and the R, and a ball terminal that swings out from the tail of the y and the leg of the R. The letterforms lean slightly retro without being a revival of one specific poster style, and the spacing is tight enough that the rows read as a single block. The ground is a flat cream with four green sparkles, and three captions are set around the words, one of them curved along the right edge. The face is a retro display for packaging, signs and short headlines: it needs size and one strong colour, and the long terminals mean it cannot be set close to a trim edge.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Picky Retro’s stroke geometry.

Wedding

Welcome sign for a retro wedding

The chunky serif gives a welcome sign a period feel without a script, and the ball terminals keep it warm rather than formal.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 500 by 350 mm board: set the greeting at 110 pt across two rows, keep 26 mm of clear ground beneath before the names at 30 pt, and hold 24 mm of border so the terminals stay inside.

Pre-production check

The long terminals on the P and R can cross a frame; print one board at the final size and check both sides before the set.

Brand & packaging

Label for a small brewery

A fat retro serif reads from across a bar, and a single burnt orange on a bottle gives a small brewery a mark that looks designed.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 60 by 90 mm bottle label: set the beer name at 20 pt on one row, keep 7 mm of clear ground beneath before the style at 5 pt, and hold 4 mm from the lowest terminal to the die line.

Pre-production check

Bracketed serifs close up at 20 pt on a small label; print one at the real size and check the e and the o before the order.

Editorial & posters

Title for a food and drink feature

A retro display sets a nostalgic tone for a piece about old bars or family restaurants, and it holds as a title where a script would not.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 230 by 300 mm opener: set the title at 72 pt across two rows, keep 24 mm of clear ground beneath before the standfirst at 11 pt, and hold 18 mm of margin on both sides.

Pre-production check

Tight retro spacing can look crowded at two rows; print one opener and check the lines do not touch before the issue.
