Festive dressed capitals

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas is a festive display on a cream ground: tall capitals each dressed with a different costume — belts, hats, stripes, scarves and small faces — with a garland above and a ribbon below that lists the file formats and the count of colours.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Merry Christmas.

The plate is a full illustration in which every letter is a character, so the word reads as a row of figures rather than as typesetting. That construction is the product, and it sets a large size floor, because the faces and the small props close when the letters shrink; the plate sets the words large enough that each costume is recognisable. The garland, the bows and the ribbon are staging and product copy. Because the letters are decorated individually, the face suits a card, a shirt and a sign for a seasonal market, and a buyer should know that the set includes separate decoration files, which is what the ribbon states. It is not a text face, and the plate is honest about that by showing one greeting only.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Merry Christmas’s stroke geometry.

Card for a family Christmas

A dressed display sets the season in the lettering, and the individual costumes make a greeting read as a row of characters.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A6 card: the greeting at 30 pt, the details in a 10 pt sans, and the date at 9 pt. Keep 15 mm margins and print five colours on a white card. Leave 14 mm at the foot for the address line.

Pre-production check

Check the 30 pt greeting at home-print resolution, where a costume can merge; keep each detail above 1.2 mm. Confirm the 10 pt details keep a 4.5:1 contrast and that the card folds flat.

Winter

Sign for a Christmas market

A dressed display draws a child's eye at a market, and the heavy outlines read from a few metres away. A market sign is read by children first.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A2 print: the greeting at 80 mm cap height, the dates in a 20 mm sans, and the stall number at 10 mm. Keep 28 mm margins and print five colours on a light stock.

Pre-production check

Check the A2 at four metres, where a costume can blur; keep 4 mm between letters. Confirm the 10 mm stall number reads at two metres and that the greeting clears the trim.

Winter

Shirt graphic for a party

A festive display prints as a costume piece, and the outlines keep the figures separate on a coloured shirt. A costume reads on a shirt from across a room.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 250 mm chest graphic: the greeting at 55 mm cap height, the year at 26 mm, and five inks on a dark shirt. Keep the smallest costume detail at 5 mm and place the graphic 80 mm below the collar.

Pre-production check

Check the screen at actual mesh, where a 5 mm detail can fill; enlarge it. Wash-test one shirt and confirm the outlines stay closed after five cycles.
