Modern high contrast serif

Melona Woman

Melona Woman is a fine modern serif in white over a portrait with pearls: mixed case with a tall angular M, broad lowercase bowls, fine bracketed serifs and hairline joins, set in two lines with a tracked line beneath and credits in the corners.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Melona Woman.

The two words are stacked across the image and the drawing is a modern serif with strong contrast: the M is tall and angular above the x-height, the bowls are broad, and the joins are hairlines, which gives the face a fashion editorial character. The portrait behind it is staging, and the placement across the neckline shows that the face reads over a complex photograph because the stems are heavy. The corner credits and the line beneath are small tracked caps that name the studio and the style, which is how a commercial specimen is organised. Because the contrast is high and the serifs fine, the face belongs on coated stock or a screen at display sizes, and the plate sets it large enough that a buyer can judge the joins and the terminals.

Editorial & posters

Cover for a style supplement

A modern high contrast serif gives a supplement a fashion voice, and the heavy stems read over a cover photograph. The heavy stems carry it over the photograph.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the title at 90 mm cap height across 200 mm, the cover lines in an 8 pt sans, and the issue at 7 pt. Print one ink on a coated stock and keep the title clear of the model's face.

Pre-production check

Check the title at 90 mm, where a hairline join can break on textured stock; specify coated. Confirm the 7 pt issue survives lamination and that the title reads at thumbnail size.

Wedding

Invitation for a garden wedding

A high contrast serif reads as formal without a period feel, and the broad lowercase holds a long couple's name. The tone stays formal, not fussy.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

A5 invitation: the names at 26 pt, the request in a 9.5 pt serif, and the date at 8.5 pt caps. Keep 24 mm margins and letterpress one ink on a cotton card.

Pre-production check

Check the 26 pt names in letterpress, where a hairline can sink into the cotton; proof the plate first. Confirm the 9.5 pt request reads at arm's length and that the names clear the trim.

Brand & packaging

Label for a skincare line

A fine serif gives a skincare label a cosmetic register, and the heavy stems survive a small curved bottle. The label is small, so the proof matters more than the mockup.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Print a 45 by 65 mm label: the brand at 12 pt, the product at 7.5 pt, and the volume at 6 pt. Keep 4 mm inside the die and keep the thinnest serif above 0.25 mm.

Pre-production check

Check the 12 pt brand on a curved bottle, where a hairline serif can fill; keep it above 0.25 mm. Confirm the 6 pt volume reads on the shelf and that the label holds in a humid room.
