Elegant high-contrast serif with swash tail
Mellian is an elegant serif in gold on a dark portrait: high contrast stems, fine hairlines, a long swash that lifts off the l and curls above the word, and softened serifs, so the name reads as a fashion or fragrance mark rather than as an editorial serif.

Visual anatomy & craft review
The name is set once, wide, with a mixed case that lets the swash do the work: the l and the final n both carry extended strokes, one rising above the cap height and one dropping away, which frames the word and gives it a signature. The contrast is high but the hairlines are not didone-thin, so the face holds at moderate sizes, and the serifs are slightly softened rather than flat, which keeps the tone closer to a modern classic than to an engraved face. Spacing is generous, so the swashes read separately, and the lowercase stays narrow next to a wide M, which is what gives the lockup its tension. The ground is a blurred portrait in low light, and the small tracked credits at the corners and beneath are set in a light serif, so the page reads as a fragrance campaign rather than a specimen.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Mellian’s stroke geometry.
A swashed serif reads as luxury without a symbol, and the extended strokes give a small brand a signature element that costs nothing extra at print.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Set the mark at 30 pt on a carton and 16 pt on a bottle label, with a 7 pt light serif descriptor at 250 units tracking. Keep the mark one colour, and keep clear space equal to the swash height on every side so the tail never collides.
Pre-production check
Check the 16 pt label, where the swash tail can crowd the descriptor; shorten the tail for small sizes. Confirm the 7 pt descriptor reads on the bottle and that the mark holds at 30 percent in a marketplace thumbnail.
An elegant serif with a swash gives formal stationery a signature line, and the softened hairlines survive letterpress where a didone's thin strokes would break up.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
A5 invitation: the names at 26 pt, the request in a 10 pt serif, and the date in 9 pt caps. Keep 22 mm margins, leave 10 mm clear under the swash, and letterpress one ink on a heavy cotton card.
Pre-production check
Check the 26 pt names on the cotton stock, where the softened serifs can lose their edge; proof the plate. Confirm the 10 pt request reads at arm's length and that the swash does not run into the date line.
A swashed serif gives a literary cover a human voice, and the extended stroke creates a quiet graphic element that can hold a cover without an illustration.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Set the title at 70 mm wide on a 210 mm cover, the author in a 10 pt serif, and the imprint at 7 pt. Keep the swash running into the upper third and let the lower half stay empty so the title breathes.
Pre-production check
Check the title at thumbnail size, where the swash can read as a stray line; keep it attached to the letter. Confirm the 10 pt author reads in a shop and that the imprint survives the matte lamination.
