Visual anatomy & craft review
Base Form sits across the middle of the card in white on a soft blue-grey ground patterned with faint triangles and polygons, and the letters are set in mixed case at a size where the serifs are clearly visible. The forms are calm rather than elegant: the a is double-storey with a small bowl, the e has a short bar, the r ends in a small flag, and the terminals are cut flat instead of tapering. Stroke contrast is low, which is what makes the face look like a working text face rather than a display cut, and the spacing is generous enough that the word breathes. A spaced line of small caps above introduces it and a single line below repeats the style claim. The face has no showpiece detail to catch the eye, so it succeeds where a text face should: it sets a sentence without drawing attention to itself, and it will hold up in a book at 10 pt.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Base Form’s stroke geometry.
The low contrast keeps long paragraphs calm on uncoated paper, and the open counters stay readable at ten points where a high-contrast serif would begin to sparkle.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print a 135 by 216 mm page: set the body at 10.5 pt on 14 pt leading, keep 24 mm of clear ground under the running head before the first line, and hold 18 mm of margin at the fore edge.
Pre-production check
Low-contrast serifs go slightly heavy on absorbent stock; print one signature on the real paper and check the colour before the run.
The plain skeleton reads as serious and stays clear when reduced to a spine or a letterhead, which is what a publishing mark has to do before it does anything else.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print a 40 mm spine and a 210 mm letterhead from one file: set the name at 14 pt on the spine and 24 pt on the letterhead, keep 8 mm of clear space under the mark on the sheet, and hold 6 mm from the neighbouring type.
Pre-production check
Small wordmarks pick up ink spread on uncoated paper; print one letterhead and compare the mark with the digital file before the stationery order.
The open counters and short serifs suit early readers who need shapes that do not crowd, and the face stays steady when a page is photocopied for a whole class.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print an A5 reader: set the text at 12 pt on 16 pt leading, keep 20 mm of clear ground beneath the chapter head before the first line, and hold 16 mm of margin on the inner and outer edges.
Pre-production check
Photocopies thicken low-contrast serifs; copy one page on the school machine and check the counters before the class set.
