High-contrast display serif
Plant Roots is an elegant display serif in dark brown on cream: very high contrast, thin hairline serifs, tall narrow stems and a pair of letters that overlap in a drawn ligature, set in two lines with a tracked label above and beneath.

Sturdy stroke walls and open counters weed cleanly on adhesive vinyl, HTV apparel film, and cut cardstock.
Visual anatomy & craft review
The two words are stacked and the drawing is a contrasted didone: the stems are heavy, the hairlines are fine, and the serifs are hairline flicks, which gives the block its editorial elegance. The ligature between two adjacent letters is drawn so the bowls overlap, and that is the detail worth showing — it changes the word's silhouette and needs the spacing to be adjusted around it. Because the hairlines are fine, the face works at display sizes and on a smooth ground, and the plate keeps the cream plain so the contrast is maximal. The tracked labels above and beneath are set in a wide-spaced light face, which gives the plate a quiet frame without a second expressive voice.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Plant Roots’s stroke geometry.
A contrasted serif gives a studio a mark that reads as considered, and the ligature turns a two-word name into a single drawn object.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Set the mark at 20 pt on a card, 80 mm on a wall and 11 pt in a footer, using the ligature only above 20 pt. Keep one colour and reserve clear space equal to the cap height.
Pre-production check
Check the 11 pt footer, where the overlapping bowls can merge; drop the ligature at that size. Confirm the wall mark reads at six metres and that the hairlines survive a matte finish.
A contrasted serif gives a design book its authority, and the ligature lets a two-word title read as one mark at cover size.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Set the title at 100 mm cap height across 210 mm with the ligature engaged, the subtitle in a 12 pt serif, and the author at 8 pt. Print two colours on a matte stock.
Pre-production check
Check the title at 100 mm, where the hairlines can break on press; keep them above 0.3 mm. Confirm the 8 pt author survives lamination and that the ligature reads as intentional.
A contrasted serif gives a modern invitation elegance without a script, and the ligature adds a single decorative gesture to the names.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
A5 invitation: the names at 26 pt with the ligature, the request in a 10 pt serif, and the date at 9 pt caps. Keep 22 mm margins and letterpress one ink on a heavy card.
Pre-production check
Check the 26 pt names in letterpress, where hairlines can sink; proof the plate. Confirm the 10 pt request reads at arm's length and that the ligature stays open on the press.
