Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Heavytimes.

The capital H opens with a fine entry that curls above the cap line and then two slim stems, and the letters after it keep that delicacy: the e and the a close small bowls, the weak joins stay hairline, the t is crossed with a long thin bar and the y drops a narrow loop. Weight is fine and even, contrast is slight, and the ascenders rise to almost twice the x-height, which is what gives the word its airy height. The phrase finishes with a long exit that draws a small heart just above the baseline before tapering away, and that heart is the only closed decorative shape in the composition. Spacing is generous, so a single word holds a wide panel without tracking. The pale neutrals, the photographic fragments and the small serif caption are presentation; the calligraphy is the word.

Practical applications

Project & layout
blueprints.

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Heavytimes’s stroke geometry.

Wedding

Front of a save-the-date card

The fine loops and the heart tail give a save-the-date a romantic detail without illustration, and the generous spacing keeps the names calm on a small card.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set both names at 26 pt on a 148 by 105 mm card, set the date in a small caps serif at 9 pt, and leave 18 mm below the tail so the date has clear space.

Pre-production check

A heart under 4 mm at 26 pt can close into a dot; check the proof at final size and open the heart rather than enlarging the names.

Valentine

Card for a February gift

The heart tail carries the occasion without a printed symbol, and the delicate stroke keeps the message from feeling heavy on a small card.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the message at 24 pt on a 105 by 148 mm card, keep the sender in the same face at 11 pt, and leave 16 mm of margin so the tail is inside the trim.

Pre-production check

A fine heart in a single colour can look like an ink blob; check the printed card and thicken the heart line only if it stops reading.

Wedding

Envelope mark for a small suite

The delicate hand gives an envelope front a composed mark at a small size, and the generous spacing keeps it readable where tracking would look stretched.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the names at 20 pt in the centre of a 110 by 220 mm envelope, set the address in a 10 pt serif, and hold 14 mm between the names and the first address line.

Pre-production check

Envelopes crease at the flap; check the artwork against the crease and move the names down if the heart tail crosses it.
