Formal calligraphic script with a large calligraphic capital

Alignment

Alignment is a formal calligraphy script whose capital occupies three times the x-height and whose oval flourish sweeps out from the first letter and back under the last, so the word is framed top and bottom by one continuous gesture.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Alignment.

The capital A is the structure of the whole word. A small curl starts the letter above the cap line, the stroke then drops into a wide diagonal that crosses a hairline entry stroke before it turns, and the diagonal finishes with a counter that hangs below the baseline, which is what pushes the visible centre of the word upward. The lowercase letters are narrow and evenly spaced, their downstrokes shaded, the upstrokes hairline, and the joins pass through a consistent mid-height band so the row stays level. The final t throws a horizontal swash that ends in a small hook, echoing the opening curl, and the l ascender is the only tall stem that interrupts the low band in the middle. Ends taper to points. The mottled pale background and the tracked caps line beneath are presentation; the calligraphy is the word.

Practical applications

Project & layout

Concrete hierarchy, scale and production guidance tailored to Alignment’s stroke geometry.

Wedding

Ceremony programme cover

A formal script with an oversized capital sets a programme apart from a printed order of service, and the long oval flourish gives a short word enough width to balance a tall A5 cover without extra rules or borders.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the couple's names at 26 pt on the top third of a 148 by 210 mm cover, set the date in a tracked small caps serif at 8 pt at the foot, and leave the middle third empty so the descender of the A is not crowded.

Pre-production check

The capital's lower counter sits close to whatever text follows; check the 26 pt setting with the 8 pt date and open the gap until the two shapes stop competing.

Brand & packaging

Label for a calligraphy workshop

The face is itself the product being taught, so using it on the studio's own label is honest, and the hairline-to-shade contrast shows a prospective student exactly what a pointed pen produces.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the studio name at 14 pt on a 60 by 90 mm label, keep the workshop date and venue in a plain sans at 6 pt, and keep 10 mm clear above the capital so its curl sits inside the printed area.

Pre-production check

Offset printing on a matte label closes the hairlines at 14 pt; ask for the printer's minimum line and drop to a smaller capital if the joins start to break.

Valentine

Letterpress card with a single line

One line of formal script fills a small card without ornament, and the shaded downstrokes give letterpress something to bite into, which is the physical quality a plain digital serif cannot produce.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the line at 20 pt on a 105 by 74 mm card, centre it optically, and keep the envelope-size mark in a light sans at 5 pt on the back where it cannot interfere with the writing.

Pre-production check

Deep letterpress impression spreads a hairline; ask for a plate proof on the actual cotton stock and thicken the joints if the upstrokes disappear into the paper.
