Open looping monoline script with exaggerated ascenders

Blue

Blue is an open monoline script whose ascenders and descenders run two or three times the x-height, with wide untouching loops and thin joins that make the word read as a loose ribbon rather than a solid line of text.

Visual anatomy & craft review

Letterform structure
of Blue.

The capital B is two tall lobes with a narrow waist, and its stem carries no serif or entry stroke at the top, so the letter begins as a plain vertical. The l reaches far above the cap line and opens into a loop that does not close, the f cuts through the line at an angle with a short bar, and the final t throws a wide horizontal swash that rises slightly at its end, so the word finishes higher than it started. The n and the o keep wide open bowls, and the joins between letters are drawn as thin connecting arcs that sit low and occasionally lift clear of the following letter. Weight never changes, and the ends stop without taper. The generous open counters and the space inside the loops are what let the word read at a distance. The plain white ground and the two tracked caps lines are presentation; the script is the word.

Note card for a small stationery brand

Open loops and light joins keep a short message from feeling dense, and the exaggerated ascenders let a two-word line fill a landscape card without the tracking being stretched to cover the width.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the message at 22 pt on a 148 by 105 mm card, keep the brand mark in a small caps serif at 6 pt on the back, and leave 15 mm clear on both sides so the final swash is not clipped by the trim.

Pre-production check

Letterpress prints a 0.2 mm monoline unevenly; ask for a plate proof and give the joins a tenth of a point more weight if the printed line looks broken.

Names on a folded order of service

The wide, untouching loops keep two long names legible on one line at a size that still fits a folded booklet, which is the constraint that defeats most decorative scripts.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set both names at 20 pt on the front of a 105 by 210 mm folded booklet, set the ceremony details in a 9 pt serif inside, and hold 12 mm above the names so the tall l and B loops do not collide with the header rule.

Pre-production check

A tall ascender that reaches into the fold line of a booklet will crack; check the imposition against the artwork and lower the names if the loop crosses the fold.

Brand & packaging

Packaging for a loose-leaf tea brand

A light open script signals something steeped and unhurried rather than manufactured, and the open counters stay crisp when the mark is printed small on a tin where heavy scripts turn into a dark smear.

Hierarchy & layout recipe

Set the brand at 11 pt on a 60 by 60 mm tin face, keep the blend name in a narrow sans at 6 pt beneath, and leave the centre of the tin empty so the loop of the B reads against bare metal.

Pre-production check

Printing on curved tin compresses the edges of the artwork; check the flat proof against the curvature and shorten the final swash if it wraps out of view.
