Romantic dip-pen calligraphy with heavy downstrokes and long swashes
Ashley Southine is a romantic dip-pen script in which the downstrokes run heavy and fast, the upstrokes thin to hairlines and the final letter throws a long swash, so a name reads as something written with a pointed nib on rough paper.

Visual anatomy & craft review
The A opens a tall looping capital, the s keeps a shallow spine, the h rises into a narrow loop, the e turns a light eye, the y drops a hooked tail and the final e finishes a swash that runs under the word, all at a strong nib contrast with a quick forward slant. The swash is the character: it appears only on the last letter and pulls the whole line out to the right, which is how the sample sets two stacked words with air beneath. Because the downstrokes are heavy, the face holds from 24 pt and prints well on textured stock; the hairline upstrokes need a smooth surface at small sizes. The nib, the white paper, the round letter-spaced badge and the small caps are presentation; the black script names are the face.

The nib contrast makes a printed invitation feel written, and the closing swash fills the empty right side of a card at 30 pt.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print a 130 by 180 mm card: set both names at 30 pt on two lines, let the closing swash run 20 mm to the right, and keep 18 mm of margin so it finishes inside the trim.
Pre-production check
A closing swash that touches the trim looks cut; check the printed card and pull the whole line inward by 6 mm.
The dip-pen register suits a calligraphy teaching studio, and the heavy downstrokes still read at 20 pt on a coated card.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print a 90 by 50 mm card: set the name at 20 pt in the upper half, set the class details in a 6 pt sans at the foot, and keep 10 mm of white under the descender so the tail has room.
Pre-production check
A hooked tail crowded by small type looks clipped; check the card and open the gap before reducing the name.
The swash marks the end of a long read, and the heavy-to-thin nib contrast holds a short sign-off at 28 pt on a magazine page.
Hierarchy & layout recipe
Print an A4 page: set the sign-off at 28 pt at the end of the final column, align it to the right edge, and keep 14 mm of clear space above so it reads as a mark and not as copy.
Pre-production check
A script set straight after a paragraph is read as body text; check the page and add a short rule above the sign-off.
